For Dr. John V. Flynn, Jr. '60, Chair of the Planned Giving Committee, the decision to make a planned gift to Archmere Academy was simply a matter of making a return on the investment that he received from Archmere.

"Archmere was a change, or an inflection point in my life," says Dr. Flynn, who grew up in a rural community in southern New Jersey. The opening of the new Delaware Memorial Bridge in 1955 opened up a new world for him, as well-it gave him the chance to travel across the bridge to attend Archmere. "That experience changed my life - in terms of the goals that I set for myself, and the goals I was able to achieve because of my education."

Following his graduation from Archmere in 1960, Dr. Flynn received a B. S. with honors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University. Recently retired, Dr. Flynn has served as the Chief Operating Officer of the City of Wilmington and Managing Director of Touche Consulting's Philadelphia office, leading it through the merger with the Deloitte firm. Dr. Flynn served as President and COO of Rollins Environmental Services, Inc. from 1995-1997, before returning to Deloitte Consulting as Managing Director in Philadelphia and a Global Practice Director.

Dr. Flynn's relationship with Archmere continued to strengthen as he became an AUK parent (Jeffrey '86 and Brian '89,) and served as president of the Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Trustees. An outgrowth of his lifelong relationship with the school is a commitment to "give back" and help others to enjoy its rich resources. "Including Archmere in my legacy plans is a natural continuation of my involvement and commitment to the school," says Dr. Flynn. "It is an easy way to continue the relationship that has given me so much over the years."

"To me, it's important that Archmere is a continuing institution for higher learning," he states, adding that he became a donor to Archmere because of the impact that the academy had, not only on his life, but also the lives of his children. "I want others to have the same opportunity that I was fortunate enough to have."

"It is important that all of us who have benefitted directly, or through our children, give this consideration - making a planned gift is a continued benefit to the Archmere community, and to the children of the future."
